Coral Reef’s year round Youth Sailing Program has its emphasis on racing and is considered one of the best in the United State. In the last decade, our program has produced numerous National champions, US National Team Members, and US participants in qualifying Regattas around the world. Our program utilizes the single handed Optimist Dingy for our younger sailors and the double handed spinnaker equipped 420 for our older teen participants. Our coaches are selected as the best racing coaching talent available in the US and beyond. The Program has a Fall Session from September to December and a Spring Session from January through May. The Program meets on weekends with an optional weekday afternoon and attends local, regional, and international Regattas throughout the year.
The Optimist Green Fleet program is for Optimist age sailors (8-15) who have either completed CRYC summer camp, or a similar program, or are beginner racers. In the Green Fleet program, young sailors are taught sail trim, sailboat racing, rules, tactics, and basic strategies. The program attends approximately one regatta per month mostly within an hour’s travel time from the Club. Our Greenfleet racers learn fast and have the best record of Greenfleet National wins over the last decade. There are also fun trips to close islands and sand bars, fun days, “Big Boat” days, and many other water related activities.
Red, White and Blue
Optimist RWB Fleets are age group fleets that Green fleet sailors move to once having become proficient at racing. White Fleet is for skippers who are 10 and under. Blue fleet is for skippers who are 11 or 12. Red fleet is for skippers who are 13, 14 or 15. Sailors receive world class racing instruction from top coaches in small groups and are supported with coaches and motorboats at designated regattas. The program emphasizes focus, personal responsibility and the principles of Corinthian yachting excellence. CRYC team racers are renowned for being among the best prepared and highest achieving young sailors in the nation. These skills are highly valued at private high schools with sailing programs and the best Northeastern Colleges and Universities.
420 Race Program
CRYC’s post Opti Program is for sailors 12-17 and is sailed in the double handed spinnaker equipped Club 420 sailboat. The 420 is the sailboat utilized in current high school and college competitions. The 420 teaches skills such as team work, division of labor, as well as sail trim, rig set up, strategy and tactics that will apply to most other boats, big and small, that you will sail during your lifetimes. Currently both learn to sail and advanced racing programs are offered. Intermediates practice on Saturdays and Racers practice on Sunday with numerous clinics, events, and regattas available to all. Participants get to experience Fleet racing, team racing, and “Big Boat” days. Our 420 sailors have experienced fun and enriching weekend practices, competitive local regattas within 2 hours of home, and have achieved National recognition in regattas throughout the country.
