FAREWELL TO A GOOD FRIEND
by Janet Q. Festinger
Whether a special occasion or a casual dinner, Coral Reef Members and guests have enjoyed the fine cuisine served at the Club. This has always been under the direction of our “Commodore of the kitchen” Chef Luis Collazo. We know him by his joyous smile and tall white toque. Luis, after thirty years of dedicated service, is retiring to share the coming years with wife Rosa, daughters Rose and Magda, grandson Angelo and Andreas, and granddaughter Nicole.
Chef arrived from Cuba in 1959, went to New York and took some classes. He secured a job in a private country club in Stonybrook, Long Island where the master chef noticed the young man’s talent and devotion to cooking. For the next three years he trained Luis in all areas of the culinary arts.
After returning to Miami, Luis became a chef in 1968. His kitchen conquest came at the Cross Way Inn, The Rusty Pelican and Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club. In the years at Coral Reef, Chef has enjoyed his collaborations with the Ladies’ Day menu divas who have inspired his palate and added to his repertoire. Coral Reef has also expanded his knowledge by sending Luis to seminars. With the broadening of Americans taste buds and the additional foods available, there is a constant demand for changing menus.
At seventy two years of age, Chef Luis is folding his Coral Reef apron and looking forward to finally spending holiday meals with his family. His pleasure has been cooking for the Club’s families and now he will do that for his own. We will have a reception for Chef Luis on September 28th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to wish him well on his next adventure. Salud, Chef!. Good wishes to you from the entire Coral Reef Membership and staff.

BON VOYAGE, KATHIE!!!
CRYC has many traditions. One very special one is to honor our valued employees at their retirement with a big Bon Voyage Party (after all, we are a yacht club). We did this for Shag and Victor and we did it on May 25 for our wonderful Kathie Mayer.
As everyone knows, Kathie is our CRYC treasure. She is our “institutional memory” as she knows everyone and everything and when it all happened. Kathie is the one who sold us drink tickets at Sundowners, sent e-mail reminders for meetings, coordinated our tables at the big parties and … her favorite event … did reservations and check-in at Ladies Day. In order to honor her service, the Club raised $21,000 for a “Going Away Bonus” for her to enjoy. Many came to congratulate her.

2011 SNIPE MASTERS….THE GOAL IS TO HAVE FUN
When Miami’s Coral Reef Yacht Club started planning this weekend’s three day US Snipe Masters, they found a pleasant surprise in the Deed of Gift. The goal is to have fun. I guess that explains this quote from the US Snipe Website… “Many boat designs and classes have come and gone, but the Snipe Class has always been there to offer Serious Sailing, Serious Fun®.”After all, this class has been around for 80 years and looks like it is in it for the long term.Coral Reef will make sure that the sailors are satisfied.
The PRO is Jaime Ramon and Event Organizers are Doug Broeker and Wendy Kamilar.

TRIGG ADAMS WINS CENTER OF EFFORT AWARD
Coral Reef Yacht Club's "Center of Effort" award now has its 14th honoree. The Center of Effort is a single focal point in the Race Committee where they can visualize the dynami cs of the group coming together, driven forward toward race committee excellence. It is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the Coral Reef Yacht Club Race Committee contributing to Regatta Excellence through the years in the categories of Leadership, Judging, Race Management, Appeals, and Racing Rules.
The latest Selection was announced at the Spring RC Party held at Sally Browne's lovely Grove home. PC Bill Smoak, a previous COE winner announced the selection. Trigg was totally surprised. He won the award for his leadership in helping make sure that the Race Committee's boats and gear were in "running order" prior to each regatta. He took on this task on his own and did it without expectation of praise and glory. A member of the RC BIMBOs (Brotherhood of International Mark Boat Operators), he also spends a lot of time on the water during our regattas. Congrats to Trigg!

They SPRINGed, they SPRANG, and now they are SPRUNG!!! CRYC hosted a “little” Regatta this past weekend. We had a terrific turnout for this event (more than we expected with 57 in the more experienced Gold Division and 34 in Silver) and with some great breeze and sunshine, we were able to manage 8 races in the Gold Fleet and 12 races in the Silver Fleet. Jaime Ramon was the PRO for the Gold Fleet and PC Mark Kamilar was the PRO for the Silver Fleet. PC Carol Ewing was the regatta chair. Coral Reefers trophied too….with Ben Kern 2nd in Gold and Julia Kowalewska 1st place in Silver followed by Harry Sanchez in 2nd. . It was a fun regatta! Look in Youth Sailing for complete results.

SUNNY SKIES AND GREAT COMPETITION - CORAL REEF CUP DELIVERS
After three days of Etchells racing and seven races, Miami’s Coral Reef Yacht Club (CRYC) had another great Coral Reef Cup with 27 boats competing. This year’s winner was Ft. Lauderdale’s Leading Edge skippered by Jeff Dever with Ched Proctor and Dave Lutian crewing. They won with 20 points and three bullets. They were followed by Texan Marvin Beckman on Keep Smiling with crew Jack Franko and Walt Duffy. In 3rd place was Chicago’s Bryon Ehrhart’s Lucky sailing with Rodney Hagebols and Chris Lefferdink. In 4th and 5th place were previous Coral Reef Cup winners CRYC’s Buddy Cribb and NYYC’s Senet Bischoff. Their crews were Eamonn DeLisser and Frank Atkinson on Cribb’s Victory and John Edenbach and Stu Saffer on Bischoff’s KGB.
Like the Etchells Jaguar Cup Series run by CRYC’s neighbor BBYC, sailors got to enjoy sailing in the sun on Biscayne Bay with great race management. According to Bischoff, a former CRYC Youth Sailor, “the difference is that because it is a smaller fleet, you get to sail next to someone and see how you are doing. The small fleet at the Coral Reef Cup is better for tuning and testing boat speed…this is super as we look forward to the Worlds in June in San Diego.”
The winner had a huge lead early with two bullets and held it. The competition was right behind. There were only 5 points between 2nd place and 5th place. According to the spectator fleet, the last race was spectacular with leaders covering each other. The name of the winning boat, Leading Edge was so… perfect as it was impossible to catch her. Although she finished 4th in the final race, her overall winning margin was eight points….a sweet victory.
The regatta photo was by CRYC Member and Coral Reef Cup Chief Scorer, Win Cooper.
